Coming Attractions: The Shape of Water (December, 2017)

“The Shape of Water” stars Sally Hawkins and is director by the master of fantasy, Guillermo del Toro.

I can hardly wait to get my eyes on “The Shape of Water,” the new fantasy film from the brilliant Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth). If the advance reviews and the film’s success at the 74th Venice Film Festival can be believed, then American audiences are in for a treat this holiday season.

“The Shape of Water” is set during the Cold War. Government scientists are studying an amphibious creature they found in the Amazon region at a secret laboratory in Baltimore, where Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) works as a janitor. She overcomes a disability and develops a relationship with the creature (Doug Jones) much to the discomposure of the project manager (Michael Shannon). No doubt these are premium actors working with an acclaimed director. I expect the results will be most pleasing.

The release schedule of “The Shape of Water” is shaping up. Fox Searchlight Pictures will roll the film out gradually, starting December 1st in New York City. Wide release could be later that month. The sooner the better.
