Not the perfect horror movie, but GORE-iffic nonetheless.  “You’re Next” is a home invasion thriller with a mystery element added.  Do the masked killers have a purpose?  Or, is it just random violence?  Director Adam Wingard and company put on an intriguing show.

A wealthy couple invite their children back to the empty nest for their wedding anniversary.  Shortly after a tension-filled reunion dinner, the upscale Missouri vacation home becomes a death trap as masked invaders prove they can appear both inside and outside the home seemingly at will.  They are everywhere.  One by one, the reunion guests get knocked off.

But Lamb Mask (L.C. Holt), Fox Mask (Lane Hughes) and Tiger Mask (Simon Barrett) didn’t count on the feisty girlfriend of one of the siblings.  Erin (Sharni Vinson) apparently has a background that makes her the surprising foil for these nasty killers.  It quickly becomes clear that Erin has the skills to survive a very bloody night.

The film’s title comes from the words written in blood more than once in this fast-moving thriller.  Wingard keeps this low-budget gem interesting from start to finish.  And, have we mentioned the gore?  Yes, the horror genre can be boring at times.  But, “You’re Next” provides some fresh, if not totally original, ways to check out.  Ultimately, the style and special effects give you the inner squeals needed to enjoy the bloodworks.

The acting is nothing special, but adequate.  The musical choices are interesting, including two versions of a decades-old rock tune.  There’s black humor, plenty of tension and buckets of blood.  Who could ask for a better time?  Grade: B
