DVD Review: Eaters (aka Rise of the Dead)

Eaters

Hey, now that’s Italian!  There are zombie movies of every nationality, so why not Italy?

The big problem with “Eaters” is that it needed a bigger budget and more coherent screenplay.  The basic story is sound.

The world, of course, is overrun by zombies after a mysterious epidemic.  Three men, a bizarre scientist and two burned-out zombie hunters would like to find a cure or a cause or both.  The two men leave their home base to bring back “live” dead subjects for the scientist to experiment on.  Their adventures in zombieland are anything but routine.

As I mentioned before, the story is workable but there’s too much silliness in the screenplay.  Encounters that could be horrifying are just inanely lifeless.  The special effects are among the type you might see in the original “Evil Dead.”  Far from state-of-the-art.

European filmmakers have shown great potential in the horror genre.  “Eaters” won’t be remembered as one of the better efforts.  Grade: C-
