Okay, I finally got around to seeing the last installment of “The Twilight Saga.” It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. And, there are two main reasons.
One, Bella (Kristen Stewart) has finally sucked it up and become a strong woman. Nothing was a bigger turnoff than her character mooning and bitching over Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and his nice-guy vampire. In “The Twilight Saga-Breaking Dawn, Part 2,” Bella gets a much-needed fire in her belly. Her wimpy former self is suddenly a badass.
Two, the mythology of the romantic novels became more potable to horror fans. The idea of Bella and Edward’s child being an immortal pain in the ass dealing death and destruction was kinda cool. The buildup to the “war” between the ruling vampire clan, the Volturi, and the good guys (the Cullen vampires and nearby werewolves) was interesting and effective.
Finally, the concluding conflict had some great action. So many beheadings, I lost count. Definitely more cool “horror stuff” than you would expect in a PG-13 film. All around the mythology was well-explained and the storyline quite decent. I liked this film more than the four previous installments. And, so I give it a moderate recommendation. Grade: B-
