It’s a shame I didn’t see this movie a lot sooner. “Jack Reacher” is a first-rate crime thriller starring Tom Cruise as an ex-military cop who deals extra-judicial justice.
Based on pre-release publicity, I thought this was going to be your standard brawling action flick with plenty of street fights and a pedestrian plot. Was I ever surprised to see the story was much more complex than that, and had some great mystery elements to it as well?
Reacher (Cruise) is a guy without a driver’s license who wonders about the country apparently doing good-by beating the crap out of the bad guys. Pittsburgh authorities are a bit confused when a shooting suspect tells them to “Get Jack Reacher.” The former Army sniper is accused of gunning down five people near PNC Park. Reacher knows he’s guilty, but wonders why the suspect would want an ex-military investigator looking into his new crimes.
Well, that’s enough of the story, cause I don’t want to ruin it for you. Let’s just say the screenplay is smart. The acting sharp. And, the payoff is mighty fine.
Cruise may be getting older, but he’s still the best action star in Hollywood. “Jack Reacher” is typical of the kind of smart choices he’s making these days. We could really use more films like this one. Grade: A-
