DVD Review: Frankenweenie

Frankenweenie Dog

A heart-warming horror movie.  Really?  Yeah, really.

“Frankenweenie” is not just cute, it’s weird.  And, I love it.

The 3D feature-length animation is from Disney and director Tim Burton.  It’s a fleshing-out of Burton’s live-action short from many years ago.  Young Victor Frankenstein, a strange kid in a town full of strange kids, is heartbroken when his pet, Sparky, is killed while chasing a ball into the street.  After learning about reanimation in his science class, Victor decides to dig up his dog and try to revive him during a lightning storm.  Just like in the Frankenstein story, it works.  Sparky is back and friendlier than ever.  Of course, being dead has its drawbacks.  And, when other kids catch wind of the miracle/science project, they also want to give it a try.  Mayhem ensues.

Burton is truly a genius when it comes to animation.  The 3D effects really add to the enjoyment of this offbeat entertainment.  The Blu-ray versions include plenty of extras including the short film, “Captain Sparky vs. The Flying Saucers.”  Have a good time with your kids.  “Frankenweenie” is fun.  Grade: A-
