DVD Review: Sleep Tight (Mientras Duermes)

sleep tight

Smile and the world smiles with you, right?  Hmmmm.  Not in “Sleep Tight,” a Spanish-language horror thriller about an apartment concierge who wants to make everyone miserable, especially one of the building’s attractive residents, Clara (Marta Etura.)

Cesar (Luis Tosar) is not very happy with his lot in life.  He doesn’t smile much and he likes hiding under Clara’s bed until she goes to sleep.  He then comes out to torture her mentally and physically, all the while keeping his presence concealed.

Clara, however, is obviously one of the building’s cheeriest residents.  The harder Cesar tries to wreck her life, the more resilient Clara becomes.  It’s a creepy situation:  Cesar hiding, watching, plotting and abusing.

In fact, this entire movie will give you the creeps.  Tosar resembles a young Abe Vigoda.  He’s got the looks and the attitude and you can feel his character descending into madness as he fails to make Clara miserable.

“Sleep Tight” is well-directed by Spain’s Jaume Balaguero, the guy who gave horror fans “[REC]” and “[REC] 2.”  It’s definitely worth a rental.  Grade: B.
