DVD Review: The Expendables 2

He may be old. But, he's also "back."

He may be old. But, his gun works.

They’re back!  And, they don’t need walkers….yet.  This sequel to the all-star action flick from 2010 has all the old cast and some new members, too.

Sylvester Stallone leads the group of mercenaries that includes Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren (yah, and you go in pieces), Terry Crews, Randy Couture.  Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger also return from the first film in expanded roles.  And, the newbies include Liam Hemsworth, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

When one of their group is viciously killed by a psychotic terrorist (Van Damme), the macho men reunite for some payback.  They also uncover a plot to sell several tons of weapons-grade plutonium.

Okay, so what’s the verdict?  Well, this film is actually better than the original.  It has a self-deprecating sense of humor that’s a real plus.  These are over-the-hill action stars and they know it.  But, since it’s Hollywood, they still manage to kick butt.  And, the audience willingly goes along for the ride.

The action is terrific.  But, I will voice my usual complaint about the CGI blood spurts.  This is not a video game and filmmakers need to find a better way to depict exploding arteries.  It’s very annoying.

“The Expendables 2” is just entertaining enough to permit a third film.  If only these steroid-packing seniors can coordinate schedules again. Grade: B
