Hollywood@Home: Starship Troopers-Invasion

“Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?”  Not if it’s “Starship Troopers.” “Would you like to know more?”  Sorry, I love movie quotes.

Rico is back in an animated sequel to the 1997 sci-fi bloodfest in “Starship Troopers: Invasion.”  It may bug you a little.  This CG action film (direct to DVD) is based on the characters lucky enough to survive the giant bugs in previous sequels.  Rico is now a Federation general.  Carmen Ibanez is Captain of a starship.  And, Dr. Carl Jenkins is head of Paranormal Warfare.

While I have a deep appreciation of the original Paul Verhoeven film, there’s nothing to recommend this animated entry.  It’s relentless man-versus-bug action with just a splash of cartoon nudity.  A very buxom space trooper gets her screen time.

If you’re going to make an animated sequel to a live-action film, why not do something really terrific?  You could create a world that would be difficult to reproduce in a live-action.  Instead, “Starship Troopers: Invasion” is just a boring quickie.  Grade: D
