It’s not that I didn’t laugh at some of the wisecracks from Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller and Richard Ayoade. They WERE funny from time to time. But truly great film comedies are written, not improvised.
It’s obvious that Vaughn and Stiller were tossing it around, but non-stop vulgarity is no substitute for a good story. That adequate story was nowhere in sight.
Okay, here’s the story: Four bored suburbanites form a community watch group after a local security guard is viciously murdered. It seems the killer is not of this earth. Stiller and company start chasing a fast-moving alien about, even finding one of its super weapons, promptly exploding a cow.
The film is terribly overseasoned with penis jokes. Sure, it’s funny for a while. But, then you realize it’s just a substitute for a genuine story/screenplay. “The Watch” reminds me of sitting through a mildly funny SNL segment that seems to go on and on and on. These guys can do better. Grade: C
